12 Steps to Prevent Cockroaches
Seal All Food in Airtight Containers
Cockroaches are attracted to open food sources. Transfer all dry goods — cereals, flour, sugar, rice, pasta — into sealed glass or hard plastic containers immediately. Do not leave pet food out overnight.
Eliminate All Standing Water Sources
Cockroaches need water to survive and will prioritise water sources over food. Fix dripping taps, dry out sinks completely each night, and ensure no water collects under the fridge or dishwasher.
Deep Clean Behind and Under Appliances
The space behind and under the refrigerator, oven and dishwasher is the most common harbourage area in domestic kitchens. Grease, food particles and warmth create ideal conditions. Clean these areas monthly.
Seal Gaps Around Pipes and Under Doors
German cockroaches can enter through gaps as small as 1.5mm. Seal all pipe penetrations under the sink with expanding foam or silicone. Fit door sweeps to kitchen doors leading to outside or building communal areas.
Empty Bin Bags Daily
Kitchen waste bins are a primary food and water source. Empty them every evening into an outdoor bin with a secure lid. Never leave bin bags inside the property overnight.
Clean Grease Traps and Extractor Filters
Grease build-up in extractor fans, filter trays and behind hob baffles is a primary food source for cockroaches. Clean all grease-accumulating surfaces and components monthly.
Inspect Incoming Deliveries
Cockroaches and their egg cases (ootheca) are frequently introduced to properties in cardboard delivery boxes. Inspect all deliveries before bringing them inside, and break down cardboard immediately rather than storing it.
Address Neighbouring Infestations
In flats and terraced properties, cockroaches will migrate from neighbouring units through shared wall voids, pipe chases and floor penetrations. If a neighbour has a confirmed infestation, treat your property preventatively and seal all shared penetrations.
Monitor with Sticky Traps
Place non-toxic sticky monitoring traps inside cabinets, under the sink and behind appliances. Check them weekly. Early detection of low-level activity allows treatment before a population establishes.
Repair Cracks in Walls and Grouting
Cracks in tile grouting, plaster walls and wooden skirting boards provide harbourage points. Repair these promptly. Cockroaches prefer to rest in tight crevices where their bodies contact surfaces on both sides.
Store Recyclables Outside
Recycling bins containing food residue — tins, bottles, packaging — are a significant attractant. Rinse all recyclables before storing them and keep recycling bins outside or in a well-sealed outhouse.
Schedule Regular Professional Inspections
Commercial food businesses should schedule quarterly pest control inspections as a minimum. For domestic properties in high-density urban areas, bi-annual inspections provide early detection and prevention.
